Tricosane Chemical Properties,Usage,Production
Chemical Properties
white flakes
Uses
Organic synthesis.
Uses
n-Tricosane is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate.
Definition
ChEBI: Tricosane is a straight chain alkane containing 23 carbon atoms. It has a role as a volatile oil component and a plant metabolite.
General Description
Leafs (ether-alcohol).
Air & Water Reactions
Insoluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as N-TRICOSANE, may be incompatible with strong oxidizing agents like nitric acid. Charring of the hydrocarbon may occur followed by ignition of unreacted hydrocarbon and other nearby combustibles. In other settings, aliphatic saturated hydrocarbons are mostly unreactive. They are not affected by aqueous solutions of acids, alkalis, most oxidizing agents, and most reducing agents. When heated sufficiently or when ignited in the presence of air, oxygen or strong oxidizing agents, they burn exothermically to produce carbon dioxide and water.
Biological Activity
Tricosane (also known as n-Tricosane) is one of the major compounds in the essential oil of Centaurium erythraea L., accounting for approximately 15.27% of the total composition, and exhibits significant antibacterial and antidiabetic properties. It is effective against Gram-positive bacilli (inhibition zone diameter > 29 mm), but its efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria is weaker (inhibition zone diameter < 18.5 mm). Its MIC range is 0.125 to 0.5 µg/mL, and its MBC range is 0.5 to 1 µg/mL; it exhibits potential bactericidal activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Listeria monocytogenes (MBC/MIC = 1). In terms of antidiabetic activity, it inhibits α-glucosidase and tyrosinase. Furthermore, tricosane possesses antioxidant properties, with an IC50 value of 91.03 ± 0.3 μg/mL (DPPH)[1].
