Uses

Benzopurpurine 4B is a biological stain and pH indicator for pH 2.3-4.4.

Uses

For dyeing primarily cotton and viscose rayon: Colour Index vol. 2 (3rd ed., 1971) p 2101. As an analytical reagent in detection of Al, Mg, Hg, Ag, U; as a biological stain; as pH indicator, violet 1.2 to red 4.0.

Preparation

3,3′-Dimethylbenzidine double nitriding, and 4-Hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (2 Moore) coupled.

Brown to dark red powder.

Azo dyes can be explosive when suspended in air at specific concentrations. Insoluble in water.

Reactivity Profile

BENZOPURPURIN 4B is an azo compound. Azo, diazo, azido compounds can detonate. This applies in particular to organic azides that have been sensitized by the addition of metal salts or strong acids. Toxic gases are formed by mixing materials of this class with acids, aldehydes, amides, carbamates, cyanides, inorganic fluorides, halogenated organics, isocyanates, ketones, metals, nitrides, peroxides, phenols, epoxides, acyl halides, and strong oxidizing or reducing agents. Flammable gases are formed by mixing materials in this group with alkali metals. Explosive combination can occur with strong oxidizing agents, metal salts, peroxides, and sulfides.

Purification Methods

It crystallises from H2O. It is a biological stain that is violet at pH 1.2 and red at pH 4.0 and is used for detecting Al, Mg, Hg, Au and U. [Beilstein 16 H 411, 16 II 224, 16 III 474, 16 IV 601.]

The strong sulfuric acid for red light blue, shallow green light blue for diluted, precipitation; In nitric acid solution for blue, yellow to brown. The dye solution to join strong hydrochloric acid for violet black, precipitation; Add thick sodium hydroxide solution for orange brown, have precipitation; Add 10% sodium hydroxide solution in red. Mainly used for cellulose fiber dyeing and printing.
