GENERAL METHOD: To a round bottom flask was added 3-(4-bromophenyl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (1.0 mmol), benzamidine (1.0 mmol), triethylamine (2.0 mmol) and acetonitrile (10 mL). The reaction mixture was heated to 80 °C and kept for 4-14 h, followed by cooling to room temperature. The solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure to give the crude product. Water (10 mL) was added to the crude product and extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 20 mL). The organic phases were combined, washed sequentially with 1N hydrochloric acid (20 mL) and saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The organic phases were concentrated under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (100-200 mesh), using hexane:ether (95:5) as eluent to obtain the target product 4-(4-bromophenyl)-2,6-diphenylpyrimidine.
