Chloropentafluoroethane Chemical Properties,Usage,Production

Description

Chloropentafluoroethane is a colorless, odorless, nonflammable gas with an ethereal odor. Shipped as aliquefied compressed gas. Molecular weight = 154.47;Specific gravity (H2O:1) =1.3; Boiling point =-38℃;Freezing/Melting point =-106℃; Vapor pressure =7.9 atm at 21℃; 6035 mmHg at 21℃; Relative vapordensity (air =1) =5.28. Practically insoluble in water; solubility 0.006% at 20℃

Chemical Properties

Chloropentafluoroethane is a colorless, odorless, nonflammable gas. Ethereal odor. Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas.

Uses

Refrigerant, aerosol propellant

Uses

Chloropentafluoroethane is a propellant and aerating agent for foamed or sprayed foods.

Definition

ChEBI: 1-Chloro-1,1,2,2,2-pentafluoroethane is an organofluorine compound and an organochlorine compound.

General Description

Chloropentafluoroethane is a colorless odorless gas with an ether-like odor. Chloropentafluoroethane is shipped as a liquefied gas under its own vapor pressure. Chloropentafluoroethane is noncombustible. Chloropentafluoroethane can asphyxiate by the displacement of air. Contact with the liquid can cause frostbite. Exposure of the container to prolonged heat or fire may cause Chloropentafluoroethane to rupture violently and rocket.

Reactivity Profile

Chloropentafluoroethane is incompatible with the following: Alkalis, alkaline earth metals (e.g., aluminum powder, sodium, potassium, zinc) .

Health Hazard

Vapors may cause dizziness or asphyxiation without warning. Vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than air and spread along ground. Contact with gas or liquefied gas may cause burns, severe injury and/or frostbite. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.

Fire Hazard

Some may burn but none ignite readily. Containers may explode when heated. Ruptured cylinders may rocket.

Safety Profile

Mddly toxic by inhalation. A nonflammable gas. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Fand Cl-.

Potential Exposure

This material is used as a refrigerant; as a dielectric gas; and as a propellant in aerosol food preparations.

First aid

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seekmedical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit. If frostbite has occurred, seek medical attention immediately; do NOT rub the affected areas or flush them withwater. In order to prevent further tissue damage, do NOTattempt to remove frozen clothing from frostbitten areas. Iffrostbite has NOT occurred, immediately and thoroughlywash contaminated skin with soap and water.

storage

Color Code—Green: General storage may be used.Prior to working with chloropentafluoroethane you shouldbe trained on its proper handling and storage. Before entering confined space where this chemical may be present, check to make sure that sufficient oxygen (19%) exists.Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, well-ventilatedarea away from metals, including aluminum, zinc, and beryllium; and from open flames or temperatures above 52℃/125F. Procedures for the handling, use, and storage ofcylinders should be in compliance with OSHA 1910.101and 1910.169, as with the recommendations of theCompressed Gas Association

Shipping

UN1020 Chloropentafluoroethane or Refrigerant gas R-115, Hazard Class: 2.2; Labels: 2.2-Nonflammable compressed gas. Cylinders must be transported in a secure upright position, in a well-ventilated truck. Protect cylinder and labels from physical damage. The owner of the compressed gas cylinder is the only entity allowed by federal law (49CFR) to transport and refill them. It is a violation of transportation regulations to refill compressed gas cylinders without the express written permission of the owner.

Incompatibilities

Keep away from strong oxidizers, strong bases (alkalis), alkaline earth metals (e.g., aluminum powder, sodium, potassium, zinc), and beryllium. Keep away from open flames; decomposes forming toxic fumes including hydrogen chloride and HF.

Waste Disposal

Return refillable compressed gas cylinders to supplier.
