GENERAL METHODS: (2E)-1-(2-aminophenyl)-3-(2-fluorophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (1), (2E)-1-(2-aminophenyl)-3-(3-fluorophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (2), and (2E)-1-(2-aminophenyl)-3-(4-fluorophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (3) (0.02 mol each) were separately were dissolved in chloroform and adsorbed uniformly on the surface of K-10 clay (15 g each) in a Pyrex round bottom flask. Subsequently, the solvent was evaporated under vacuum and the adsorbed material was transferred to a Pyrex tube (2 cm diameter, 30 mL) and placed in a Milestone microwave reactor. The mixture was heated at 85°C for 5 min using 350 W axial power. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was dissolved in ethyl acetate (215 mL) and filtered. Evaporation of the filtrate gave the crude product, which was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: hexane/ethyl acetate, 5:1) to afford the pure products 2-(2-fluorophenyl)-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-one (4), 2-(3-fluorophenyl)-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-one (5) and 2-(4-fluorophenyl)-2 ,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-one (6). The structures of the products were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C/APT NMR, 2D-COSY NMR, IR spectroscopy and LC-MS/MS analyses and were in agreement with literature data.
