Chemical Properties

Diethyl tellurium is a light yellow liquid with a strong garlic odor, and highly toxic. It is unstable in air and catches fire at room temperature. Almost insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol.

Uses

Diethyl tellurium is an organometallic compound, which can be used to prepare infrared detection materials and prepare group II ~ VI tellurium-containing semiconductor compounds.

Synthesis

Diethyltelluride was prepared by reacting HCHO, NaHSO3.2H2O with Te under alkaline conditions
