Uses

(-)-Menthyl benzoate has found some use as a sunscreening agent. It is not used as a fragrance material in perfumes (or flavors). Being a non-phenolic chemical, it has a slight advantage over Menthyl salicylate, but it seems that the latter is still preferred for its sunscreening effect.

Synthesis

(-)-Menthyl benzoate is prepared by azeotropic esteritication of Menthot with Benzoic acid
