Step (a) 6,7-dihydrothieno[3,2-c]pyridin-4(5H)-one (lactam 2) was dissolved in acetic acid and bromination reaction was carried out by dropwise addition of bromine (Br2) at room temperature, and after completion of the reaction, 2-bromo-6,7-dihydrothieno[3,2-c]pyridin-4(5H)-one (Intermediate 3) was obtained in 75% yield.
