chlorotoluene Chemical Properties,Usage,Production

General Description

A colorless liquid. Insoluble in water. Flash point of less than 141°F. Density 8.9 lb / gal. A mixture of three isomers: ortho-, meta-, and para-. Vapors from all three irritate and will produce a narcotic effect if inhaled at high concentrations. Used as solvents and as intermediates for making other chemicals and dyes.

Air & Water Reactions

Highly flammable. Insoluble in water.

Reactivity Profile

CHLOROTOLUENE reacts with strong oxidizing agents. .

Health Hazard

INHALATION: Irritation of respiratory system. EYES AND SKIN: Severe irritation. INGESTION: Severe internal damage if swallowed.

Fire Hazard

HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water.

Safety Profile

Low toxicity by inhalation. A flammable liquid. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic vapors of
