General procedure for the synthesis of 5-bromo-6-nitro-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one using 5-bromoindanone as starting material: fuming nitric acid (166 mL) was cooled to -15 °C, followed by the addition of 5-bromoindan-1-one (25 g, 0.118 mol) in batches. The reaction mixture was stirred at a temperature range of -10°C to -15°C for 4 hours and 30 minutes. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction material was slowly poured into pre-cooled ice water (1600 mL). The precipitate precipitated was collected by diafiltration, washed with water and subsequently dissolved in dichloromethane and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na2SO4). After removal of the solvent by evaporation, the residue was purified by recrystallization from ethanol to afford the target product (15.3 g, yield: 51%). The melting point of the product was 130 °C. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ (ppm): 2.75-2.82 (m, 2H), 3.18-3.25 (m, 2H), 7.89 (s, 1H), 8.10 (s, 1H).
