It is a sesquiterpenoid precursor of the antimalarial drug, artemisinin. It has a role as a plant metabolite. It is a carbobicyclic compound, a monocarboxylic acid, a member of octahydronaphthalenes and a sesquiterpenoid. It is a conjugate acid of a dihydroartemisinate.
