To a 25 mL reaction vessel was added 6-methoxybenzothiazole (1.86 mmol, 1.1 eq.), p-methylbenzaldehyde (1.69 mmol), CuCl2 (0.51 mmol, 0.3 eq.), and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (2.36 mmol, 1.4 eq., 70% aqueous solution) under nitrogen protection. The reaction mixture was first stirred in an ice bath for 30 minutes, followed by stirring at 80 °C for 24 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: petroleum ether/ethyl acetate) to afford the target product 6-methoxy-2-(p-tolyl)benzo[d]thiazole.
