1-Tridecanol is a long-chain primary fatty alcohol tridecane substituted by a hydroxy group at position 1. It has a role as a bacterial metabolite, a plant metabolite and a human metabolite. It is a natural product found in Angelica gigas, Mikania cordifolia, and other organisms. It is an alcohol that belongs to the family of fatty alcohols. 1-Tridecanol has various applications in industries such as cosmetics, personal care products, and lubricants. 1-Tridecanol is a lipid with a terminal hydroxyl group and a non-polar tail.

1-Tridecanol is an organic compound commonly used as a surfactant, lubricant, and stabilizer. It can be used in some cleaning products, preservatives and plastic additives and can help enhance their performance and stability. It can be used as an emollient, surfactant, or viscosity regulator in skincare formulations, haircare products, and makeup. In addition, the compound is used in some industrial fields, such as in manufacturing products such as cellulose and paints. Although the compound has no direct medical application, it plays a vital role in consumer products and industrial production.

Production Methods

Isotridecyl alcohol is produced by the oxo process in which dodecenes are reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst, followed by hydrogenation . A major isomer of a commercial-grade product is tetramethyl- 1-nonanol. Because of their low volatility, these alcohols are used to produce plasticizers, and they are also used as surfactant raw materials, as lubricant intermediates, and as solvents.
