Uses

1,2-Diamino-4,5-dimethoxybenzene reacts with aldehydes to produce highly fluorescent benzimidazole derivatives. It can be used for the detection of aromatic aldehydes as well as DTAN.

Synthesis

1,2-Dimethoxy-4,5-dinitrobenzene (5 g, 21.9 mmol) was used as starting material and dissolved in methanol (147 ml). Subsequently, 10% Pd/C catalyst (639 mg) was added to the solution. The reaction was stirred for 6 h at room temperature under hydrogen atmosphere. Upon completion of the reaction, the catalyst was removed by diatomaceous earth filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue gave 4,5-dimethoxy-1,2-phenylenediamine (compound 28) directly without further purification.
