MERCURY (II) SILVER IODIDE Chemical Properties,Usage,Production
Chemical Properties
Yellow powder, becomes red at 40–50C. Soluble in solutions of potassium cyanide or potassium iodide; insoluble in dilute acids and water.
Uses
Thermal sensor to detect overheating in journal bearings, etc., becomes blood-red at 40-50° and yellow again on cooling.
Hazard
Highly toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption.
Synthesis
Mercury silver iodide was synthesized as follows: the raw materials for the synthesis were mercury nitrate, potassium iodide and silver nitrate were dialyzed pure reagents. Weigh 3.3362 g (0.01 mol) Hg (NO) 2 added to 120 ml of distilled water, stirring constantly to allow full dissolution, and then gradually added drops containing 6.64 g (0.04 mol) KI solution, began to have an orange precipitate, continue to add drops of KI so that the resulting precipitate is completely dissolved, to obtain a clarified solution. Then 3.418 g (i.e., 0.02 mol) of AgNO3 solution which had been dissolved was added dropwise to the clarified solution, and a yellow precipitate was obtained, and in order to obtain the nanoproducts, 1% to 3% of surfactant could be added, and when the dropwise addition of AgNO3 was completed, it was then left to stand for a period of time. The precipitate was filtered and dried to obtain a yellow product (spare).
