Chemical Properties

Hafnium (IV) Oxide is a white powder. M.p. 2780°C; d 9.68. Essentially identical with ZrO2 in chemical behavior. It probably forms the same types of crystal lattice.

Uses

Resists heat and corrosion, making it an ideal lining for refractory furnaces.

Preparation

Hafnium (IV) oxide is prepared by calcination of the hydroxide, oxalate, oxychloride or sulfate at 600-1000 ℃. The crystallization of the oxide starts at 400 ℃.
