Step 2: Synthesis of 4,6-dichloro-2-cyclopropylpyrimidine; 2-cyclopropylpyrimidine-4,6-diol (1.34 g, 8.40 mmol) was mixed with phosphorus trichloride (15.0 mL, 163.37 mmol), heated to reflux and the reaction was maintained for 2 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was slowly poured into ice water and the pH was subsequently adjusted to alkaline with sodium hydroxide solution. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried sequentially to afford the target product 4,6-dichloro-2-cyclopropylpyrimidine (1.02 g, 61% yield). retention time for HPLC analysis (Method B): 1.57 min.
