Chemical Properties

3-Hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid [19700-42-6], mp 248 – 249℃, gives a reddish brown color with iron(III) chloride. Coupling with diazo compounds occurs in the 4-position.

Synthesis

3-Hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid is prepared by hydrolysis of diazotized 3-amino-1-naphthoic acid with boiling aqueous copper sulfate.
