Titanium (II) bromide Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
Titanium (II) bromide is a black crystals; ignites in moist air; soluble in H2O, evolving H2.
Uses
Titanium (II) bromide (TiB2) is used for metallurgy, high-temperature electrical wiring, electronics, computers, high temperature-resistant coatings, and super alloys, including strong lightweight aluminum alloys.
Preparation
After weighing and before addition of the Ti filings, the Br2 must be cooled to -78℃, since liquid Br2 and Ti react with ignition even at room temperature. This phenomenon also occurs in the sealed tube as soon as the Br2 starts to melt. The tubes, however, are capable of withstanding the pressure.
