Description

Sofpironium bromide is a topical anticholinergic drug administered in gel form (5%) for the treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis (PAH).

Uses

Sofpironium bromide is used for the topical treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis that is not treatable with topical antiperspirants.

Mechanism of action

Sofpironium bromide treats hyperhidrosis by inhibiting the M3 muscarinic receptors, thereby reducing the activity of sweat glands.

Synthesis

Acid 106 and alcohol 109 were coupled using CDI (carbodiimide) as a coupling agent to form ester 110. Ester 110 was alkylated with ethyl methyl bromide to afford soperidinium bromide, which was isolated as a crystalline solid in several interconvertible crystalline forms.
