SCHIZOZYGINE Usage And Synthesis
Description
The major alkaloid obtained from the bark and roots of Schizozygia caffaeoides (Boj.) Baill. The base has [α]23D + 15.5° (c 1.0, CHC13) and gives an ultraviolet spectrum having absorption maxima at 269 and 313 mil. The alkaloid possesses both antipyretic and broncholytic properties. When hydrogenated in AcOH in the presence of Pt02 it yields the dihydro derivative, m.p. 190-1°C;[α]24D + 29.4° (c 1.0, CHCI3). Hydrogenation with LiAIH4, however, gives deoxoschizozygine, m.p. 213-233°C (dec.); [α]26D + 82.9° (c 1.0, CHCI3). The two reduction processes are protected by patents.
