Di-tert-butyl dicarbonate was slowly added to a solution of 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine in dichloromethane (DCM) (500 mL) of 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine (80 g, 783 mmol) and di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (91 mL, 391 mmol) at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 12 hours. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was concentrated to remove the solvent. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (neutral alumina) using methanol: dichloromethane (1:9) as eluent to afford tert-butyl (3-amino-2,2-dimethylpropyl)carbamate (50 g, 247 mmol, 31.6% yield) as a white solid. The structure of the product was confirmed by 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 0.85 (s, 6H), 1.44 (s, 9H), 2.35-2.52 (m, 2H), 3.00 (br d, J = 6.14Hz, 2H), 5.16 (br s, 1H).
