MUSCOVITE Usage And Synthesis
Definition
A natural hydrouspotassium aluminum silicate of the mica group.
Agricultural Uses
Muscovite is a mineral of the mica group and has a
structural formula [KAl3SI3O10(OH)2] It is also called
white mica or potash mica.
Muscovite occurs in some granites and is abundant in
pegmatites which are the chief commercial deposits. It
occurs as tetrahedral sheets with a negative charge
distributed over 3 surface oxygen atoms. The
isomorphous substitution in the dioctahedral mica
muscovite makes one quarter of the tetrahedral silicon
being replaced by aluminum and resulting in negatively
charged net 2 moles per unit cell. The layer charge and its
localization are sufficiently large to cause cations of relatively low ionic potential, such as potassium ion
(K+), to lose the water of hydration.
Muscovite is widely used as a source of soil
potassium, apart from its use in electrical equipments.
