Sodium orthovanadate Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
It forms colourless hexagonal columnar crystals that are soluble in water but insoluble in ethanol.
Uses
Sodium orthovanadate (Na3VO4) can be used as a metal precursor in the synthesis of:
Vanadium-MCM-48 (V-MCM-48) by anion-exchange method. V-MCM-48 is used as a catalyst in oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde.
Nanorods of vanadium oxide particles by glycothermal method.
Yttrium vanadate (YVO4) doped with colloidal europium.
Uses
Sodium Orthovanadate is an inhibitor of several phosphatases and kinases. General inhibitor of tyrosine phosphatases, a large family of enzymes that catalyze the removal of phosphate groups from tyrosine residues.
Definition
ChEBI: Trisodium vanadate is an inorganic sodium salt of formula Na3VO4 containing the tetrahedral VO4(3-) It has a role as an EC 3.1.3.48 (protein-tyrosine-phosphatase) inhibitor, a radiation protective agent, an apoptosis inducer and an antineoplastic agent. It contains a vanadate(3-).
Preparation
Sodium orthovanadate is produced by dissolving vanadium(V) oxide in a solution of sodium hydroxide:
V2O5 + 6 NaOH → 2 Na3VO4 + 3 H2O
The salt features tetrahedral VO3-4 anion centers linked to octahedral Na+ cation sites.
Hazard
Poison by ingestion.
Biological Activity
Inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatases, alkaline phosphatases and ATPases.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Sodium orthovandate suppresses the activation of p53-mediated apoptosis triggered in response to radiation. It reduces the detrimental effects of hematopoietic syndrome, hematopoiesis and delayed genotoxic effects of induced by total body irradiation of mice.24 In combination with menadione, orthovandate prevents the migration of detached human glioma cells in response to anti-cancer drugs.25
Safety Profile
Poison by ingestion, intraperitoneal, intravenous, and subcutaneous routes. Experimental reproductive effects. Mutation data reported. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of VOx and NazO. See also VANADIUM COMPOUNDS.
