Nickel(II) sulfate heptahydrate Usage And Synthesis

Chemical Properties

green to dark green needle-like crystals or powder

Uses

In electrolytic and electroless nickel-plating; as mordant in dyeing; in catalyst manufacture; in preparation of other nickel Compounds.

Uses

Nickel(II) sulfate hexahydrate may be used in the preparation of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs), required for the fabrication of a glucose biosensor.

Definition

ChEBI: A hydrate of nickel sulfate containing nickel (in +2 oxidation state), sulfate and water moieties in the ratio 1:1:7.

General Description

Nickel(II) sulfate hexahydrate is a hydrated nickel salt. Its thermal decomposition in the presence of air and helium has been studied. Its crystals exist in monoclinic and tetragonal polymorphic forms.

Synthesis

To be refined nickel sulfate dissolved in water, add an excess of concentrated ammonia, so that all the nickel into nickel-ammonia coordination compounds, and then add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, stirring thoroughly, filtration to remove the Fe (OH) 3 precipitate generated. To the filtrate was added a concentrated NaClO4 solution, at which time Ni2+ was generated almost quantitatively as [Ni(NH3)6](ClO4)2 precipitate, the precipitate was filtered out and washed well with water. The precipitate was transferred to a beaker, pure sodium carbonate solution was added and heated to volatilize out the NH3 to produce nickel carbonate precipitate. After separating the mother liquor by decantation, the precipitate is washed repeatedly with distilled water to produce the purest possible nickel carbonate. Dissolve nickel carbonate with dilute sulfuric acid to get pure nickel sulfate solution. This solution is evaporated and concentrated, and then crystallized at a temperature lower than 20??C to produce crystals of the heptahydrate NiSO4-7H2O.
