Ferro Molybdenum Usage And Synthesis
Application
Molybdenum has an atomic weight of 95.94. Its outer electron configuration is 4d⁵⁵s¹, its melting point is 2615℃, its boiling point is 4610℃, and its density (at 20℃) is 10.2 g/cm³. Molybdenum and iron form two solid solutions (α and γ) and two intermetallic compounds (ε(Fe₇Mo₆) and σ(FeMo) phases). Industrial ferromolybdenum contains approximately 60% Mo, has a melting temperature of 1800–1900℃, and a density of approximately 9.0 g/cm³. Ferromolybdenum is an iron alloy obtained by smelting molybdenite or roasted molybdenum concentrate in an electric furnace. It is mainly used as an alloying element in the smelting of magnetic steel, structural steel, and high-speed steel. Ferromolybdenum produced in my country contains approximately 55% molybdenum. If the steel contains only a small amount of molybdenum, calcium molybdate can be used as an elemental additive, which is much cheaper than ferromolybdenum.
The role of molybdenum in steel can be summarized as improving hardenability, increasing hot strength, preventing temper brittleness, increasing remanence and coercivity, and improving corrosion resistance in certain media, as well as preventing pitting corrosion. Due to the various beneficial effects of molybdenum in steel, it has been widely used in a range of steel types, including structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, tool steel, stainless acid-resistant steel, heat-resistant steel (also known as heat-strength steel), and magnetic steel. In cast iron, molybdenum is very effective in improving strength and toughness; when added at a concentration of 0.25% to 1.25%, it can form a pearlitic matrix structure even in castings with medium to large cross-sections. It is commonly used in rolls and other wear-resistant castings.
