The general procedure for the synthesis of 3-cyanobenzenesulfonamide from 3-cyanobenzenesulfonyl chloride is as follows: an excess of ammonia (22 mL) was added to a solution of acetonitrile (22 mL) containing 3-cyanobenzenesulfonyl chloride (1.0 g, 4.97 mmol) and the reaction mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was concentrated and the resulting solid was washed with water to give 500 mg of product. The aqueous phase could be extracted with ethyl acetate, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and filtered, and the solvent was evaporated to give 400 mg of product. This portion of the product was combined with the previously obtained solid to give a total yield of 0.90 g in 99% yield.
