4-Methoxy-4'-nitrobenzophenone is used as an organic chemical synthesis intermediate.

Preparation

Obtained by reaction of p-nitrobenzoyl chloride with anisole,
in the presence of MoO? 2Cl2 (20 mol%) at reflux for 20 h (3%)
in the presence of perfluorobutane sulfonic acid
in the presence of aluminium chloride in carbon disulfide for 1 h at r.t. (72%)
in the presence of MoO? 2Cl2 (20 mol%) at reflux for 20 h (31%).
