Uses

Bis(3-bromophenyl) ketone is a ketone organic compound and an important organic synthesis intermediate with wide applications in pharmaceuticals, pesticides, polymer materials and other fields.

Synthesis

3-Bromophenylboronic acid (0.249 g, 2 mmol), 5 wt% Pd/CaCO3 (0.0456 g, Pd 0.01 mmol), and CuI (0.0114 g, 0.03 mmol) were added to a 250 mL PTFE-lined pressure reactor, followed by DMSO (10 mL), and the reactor was mounted in a fume hood and slowly vented first with 1.85 atm of air and then 0.15 atm of CO, and then the reactor was placed in a 50??C oil bath for 12 hours. After the reaction was stopped, the kettle was cooled to room temperature, and the remaining gas in the kettle was slowly released in a fume hood. The reaction kettle was opened, 40 mL of ammonia with a mass concentration of 5% was added, and the palladium catalyst was filtered and separated, which could be reused after washing and drying. The mother liquor was extracted with dichloromethane (30mL) for three times, the organic phase was combined, the organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was removed by vacuum concentration to get the crude product, which was purified by column chromatography (20:1 petroleum ether/ethyl acetate, v/v/v as the eluent), and obtained bis(3-bromophenyl)methanone, which was a white solid with the melting point of 47-49??C. The product was extracted by dichloromethane (30 mL) for three times, and the organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and then concentrated in vacuum to remove the solvent to get the crude product.
