6 FUEL OIL Chemical Properties,Usage,Production
Definition
6 FUEL OIL is a distillate oil having a minimum viscosity of 900 SUS at 37.7.degree.C (100.degree.F) to a maximum of 9000 SUS at 37.7.degree.C (100.degree.F).
General Description
Thick black liquid with the odor of tar. Liquid is shipped at elevated temperature. Insoluble in water and usually less dense than water .
Air & Water Reactions
Flammable. Insoluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
6 FUEL OIL may be incompatible with strong oxidizing agents such as nitric acid. Charring may occur followed by ignition of unreacted material and other nearby combustibles. In other settings, mostly unreactive. Not affected by aqueous solutions of acids, alkalis, most oxidizing agents, and most reducing agents. When heated sufficiently or when ignited in the presence of air, oxygen or strong oxidizing agents, burns exothermically to produce mostly carbon dioxide and water.
Health Hazard
INGESTION: gastrointestinal irritation. ASPIRATION: pulmonary irritation is normally minimal but may become more severe several hours after exposure.
Flammability and Explosibility
Non flammable
