In a 150 mL three-neck flask, 17.42 g of acetone and 43.55 g of methanol were added, the reaction temperature was controlled in the range of 20-35 °C, and chlorine gas was slowly passed through. When the chlorine gas was passed in an amount of about 42.0 g, the chlorine gas was stopped and the reaction mixture was continued to be stirred for 0.5 hours. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was cooled to 0-5 °C, and filtration was carried out to afford 42.24 g of 1,3-dichloro-2,2-dimethoxypropane in 81.2% yield.
