The general procedure for the synthesis of 1,1'-(bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane-1,3-diyl)diethyl ketone from the compound (CAS: 35634-10-7) and 2,3-butanedione was as follows: 2,3-butanedione (35 mL) was added to the solution of compound 2, and the temperature of the reaction was controlled to be between 15°C and 25°C. The reaction was carried out under the irradiation of a medium pressure mercury lamp of 80 W to 150 W for 16 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction system was concentrated directly to obtain the crude product. Subsequently, the crude product was recrystallized using hexane to give pure compound 4 (23 g) in 43% yield.
