Uses

Acetalization reagent for ketones and β-keto esters. Used in the synthesis of optically active polyesters. C₂ symmetric chiral diol with versatile applications as a chiral auxiliary, building block, and chiral ligand.

Preparation

(2R,4R)-2,4-Pentanediol should be stored in a tightly closed container since it is hygroscopic.

Synthesis

(2R,4R)-2,4-Pentanediol is synthesised via asymmetric hydrogenation of 2,4-Pentanedione. Its enantiomer [72345-23-4] is also available by the same method.
