Example 5: Magnesium chips (16.8 mg, 0.7 mmol) were added to the reaction system as an activator under argon protection. Catalyst Fe(acac)3 (3.5 mg, 0.010 mmol, 2 mol%), p-chlorobenzyl chloride (157 μl, 1.35 mmol) and bis(pinacolato)borate (127.0 mg, 0.5 mmol) were added sequentially to tetrahydrofuran (1 ml). The reaction was carried out at -10 °C for 5 h, followed by addition of water to terminate the reaction. The reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate and the product was analyzed by gas chromatography in 81% yield.
