Uses

(1-Ethoxycarbonylcyclopropyl)triphenylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate is used as pharmaceutical intermediate.

Preparation

1-Carbethoxycyclopropyltriphenylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate is prepared in 80% yield by treating commercially available Cyclopropyltriphenylphosphonium Bromide sequentially with Lithium Diisopropylamide and Ethyl Chloroformate, followed by counterion exchange using sodium fluoroborate.

Application

1-Carbethoxycyclopropyltriphenylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate can be used for the hydrocyanation reduction of alkynes; dimerization of benzyl halides, allylic halides and vinyl halides; carbonylation of halides to form ketones and esters; and conversion of vinyl halides to nitriles.

Synthesis

1-Carbethoxycyclopropyltriphenylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate is prepared from the reduction of potassium tetracyanonickelate with Potassium in ammonia. The product precipitates from solution as a deep red solid.
