The general procedure for synthesizing 2-(pyridin-3-yl)propan-2-ol from 3-acetylpyridine was as follows: an ether solution of methyl lithium (1.4 M, 14 mL, 20 mmol) was used to react with 3-acetylpyridine (2.2 mL, 20 mmol) in dry tetrahydrofuran (40 mL) according to the method of Example 4a. After completion of the reaction, the product was purified by post-treatment and column chromatography using ether- petroleum ether-triethylamine (30:10:1) as eluent to afford 2-(pyridin-3-yl)propan-2-ol (1.26 g, 46% yield) as an oil. Its 1H-NMR (CDCl3) data were as follows: δ 1.58 (6H, s, CMe2), 7.22 (1H, m, Py 5-H), 7.85 (1H, m, Py 4-H), 8.32 (1H, m, Py 6-H), 8.65 (1H, m, Py 2-H); Mass Spectrum (MS) m/z 137 (M+).
