Synthesis

3-Acetylpyrrole can be prepared from pyrrole.
Pyrrole (10.0 g) was added to a well-stirred suspension of NaOH (17.9 g, 447.3 mmol) in 10 mL of dichloromethane. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0??C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 10 min. A solution of benzenesulfonyl chloride (31.6 g) in 2 mL of dichloroethane was added dropwise to the reaction mixture. After the addition is complete, allow the reaction mixture to come to room temperature. The reaction mixture was allowed to stir overnight. Pour in 60 mL of H2O to quench the reaction. Separate the organic layer. Extract the aqueous layer with dichloromethane (3 ?? 60 mL). Wash the combined organic extracts with water to neutral. Dry the combined organic extracts with Na2SO4. Remove the solvent. The residue was purified by recrystallization to give 3-acetylpyrrole.
