meso-Tetraphenylporphine is a photosensitizer that is often used to create coordination complexes with metals such as cobalt and rhodium. Cobalt meso-tetraphenylporphrine is used as a hydrogen catalyst. Meso-tetraphenylporphrine compounds are used as inhibitors of microtubule assembly in human cervix carcinoma cells.

Application

Tetraphenylporphyrin, abbreviated TPP or H2TPP, is a synthetic heterocyclic compound that resembles naturally occurring porphyrins. . . . H2TPP is a photosensitizer for the production of singlet oxygen.

Biological Activity

Tetraphenylporphyrin serves as an efficient inhibitor for Mg and its alloys. It is mainly used as a porphyrin moiety, in the preparation of ligand and introduction of metal in porphyrin.

Purification Methods

Purify TPP by chromatography on neutral (Grade I) alumina, and recrystallisation from CH2Cl2/MeOH or *C6H6. It forms complexes with metals. [Yamashita et al. J Phys Chem 91 3055 1987, Beilstein 26 III/IV 1958.]
