Chemical Properties

Yellow powder, becomes red at 40–50C. Soluble in solutions of potassium cyanide or potassium iodide; insoluble in dilute acids and water.

Uses

Thermal sensor to detect overheating in journal bearings, etc., becomes blood-red at 40-50° and yellow again on cooling.

Hazard

Highly toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption.
