4-Fluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl bromide is a hydrocarbon halide that can be used as a pharmaceutical and chemical intermediate.

Chemical Properties

4-Fluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl bromide is a colorless liquid with a density of 1.665 g/mL at 25 °C (lit.) and a boiling point of 141 °C (lit.).

Synthesis

Add 4-fluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzenemethanol, tribromooxyphosphine and liquid bromine to a 100 mL three-necked flask equipped with an off-gas absorption device, a reflux condenser tube and a thermometer, and stir for 20 min at ambient temperature, and then heat the reaction system to 80 , and follow the thin-layer chromatography, and add a certain amount of saturated aqueous sodium bisulphite after the substrate has been completely involved in the reaction (about 1 h), and then wash out the unreacted liquid bromine. Then the upper layer of aqueous hydrogen bromide solution was separated. The organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated to obtain the crude product, which was eluted by the eluent of column chromatography purification (ethyl acetate: petroleum ether=1:20) and concentrated to obtain the colorless liquid 4-fluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl bromide.
