Uses

4-Chloromethyl-2-methylpyridine is used in the preparation of HIV-1 protease inhibitors.

Synthesis

4-(Chloromethyl)-2-methylpyridine is synthesised using (2-Methylpyridin-4-yl)methanol as a raw material by chemical reaction. The specific synthesis steps are as follows:

The methylene chloride extract was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and from which the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to provide 2.46 g (yield: 100%) of brown crystalline title compound. 1H-NMR(CDCl3)delta:8.45(d,J=5.0Hz,1H),7.31(s,1H), 7.25(d,J=5.0Hz,1H),4.74(s,2H),2.48(s,3H) Mass,m/e:141 (M+,base).
