Zinc naphthenate Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
Zinc naphthenate is an amber-to-brown viscous liquid or solid. It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and toluene, and it is highly soluble in acetone. The substance is combustible. It has a zinc content of 8%–16% (8%–10% for the liquid form and 16% for the solid form) and a moisture content of no more than 0.05%.
Characteristics
Zinc naphthenate is an important organozinc compound, commonly used as a catalyst, stabilizer, and coordinating agent.
Corrosion Inhibition: Zinc ions form coordination bonds with naphthenate carboxylate anions, creating a dense, protective film on metal surfaces that effectively isolates them from oxygen, moisture, and corrosive media.
Lubricity: During cutting operations, it forms a lubricating film that reduces friction and wear, thereby enhancing processing efficiency.
Antimicrobial Activity: It inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi, preventing the spoilage of media, such as cutting fluids, caused by microbial contamination.
Catalytic Activity: It participates in organic synthesis reactions as a catalyst, accelerating reaction rates and improving product selectivity.
Uses
Drier and wetting agent in paints, varnishes, resins; insecticide; fungicide; mildew preventive; wood preservative; waterproofing textiles; insulating materials.
Preparation
Fusion of zinc oxide or hydroxide and naphthenic acid or precipitation from mixture of soluble zinc salts and sodium naphthenate.
