Chemical Properties

Demeton is a light brown liquid with an odor of sulfur compounds; freezing/melting point ≤‐13 C

Uses

Demeton-O is an organophosphorus pesticide found in some imported crops and fruits samples.

Definition

ChEBI: Demeton-O is an organic thiophosphate.

Potential Exposure

A potential danger to those involved in the manufacture, formulation, and application of this systemic insecticide and acaricide.

First aid

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Speed in removing material from skinis of extreme importance. Shampoo hair promptly if contaminated. Seek medical attention immediately. If thischemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, beginrescue breathing (using universal precautions, includingresuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. storage

Color Code—Blue: Health Hazard/Poison: Storein a secure poison location. Prior to working with demetonyou should be trained on its proper handling and storage. Aregulated, marked area should be established where thischemical is handled, used, or stored in compliance withOSHA Standard 1910.1045. Before entering confined spacewhere this chemical may be present, check to make surethat an explosive concentration does not exist. Store inDemeton 861tightly closed containers in a cool, well-ventilated areaaway from oxidizers, strong bases, water, soluble mercury, and other pesticides. Where possible, automatically pumpliquid from drums or other storage containers to processcontainers.

Incompatibilities

May form explosive mixture with air. Strong oxidizers, strong bases, soluble mercury, other pesticides, and water.

Waste Disposal

The thiono-and thiolo-isomers of this mixture are 50% hydrolyzed in 75 minutes and 0.85 min- ute, respectively @ 20℃ and pH 13. At pH 9 and 70 ℃ , the half-life of Demeton is 1.25 hour, but an pH 1-5 it is over 11 hours. Sand and rushed limestone may be added together with a flammable solvent; the resultant mixture may be burned in a furnace with afterburner and alkaline scrubber .In accordance with 40CFR165, follow recommendations for the disposal of pesticides and pesticide containers. Must be dis- posed properly by following package label directions or by contacting your local or federal environmental control agency, or by contacting your regional EPA office.
