General procedure for the synthesis of methyl 4-bromo-2-(trifluoromethoxy)benzoate from methanol and 4-bromo-2-trifluoromethoxybenzoic acid: the compound 4-bromo-2-trifluoromethoxybenzoic acid (30.0 g, 0.11 mol) was suspended in a 4 M methanol-hydrochloric acid solution (500 mL), and the reaction was carried out at reflux overnight. After completion of the reaction, methanol was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was extracted by partitioning with saturated sodium carbonate solution and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the target product methyl 4-bromo-2-(trifluoromethoxy)benzoate (24.0 g, 77% yield).
