2-CHLORO-6-METHYLPHENOL Usage And Synthesis

Chemical Properties

Coloroless to yellow liquid

Uses

2-Chloro-6-methylphenol is s an important raw material and intermediate used in Organic Synthesis, Pharmaceuticals, Agrochemicals and Dyestuffs.

Synthesis

95-48-7

1570-64-5

87-64-9

GENERAL METHOD: Molten o-cresol or m-cresol (5.41 g, 50.0 mmol), AlCl3 (0.25 g), and catalyst (100 mg) were added to a dry 50 mL round bottom flask. Thionyl chloride (4.66 mL, 57.7 mmol) was added slowly and dropwise over a period of 2 h via a pressure-equilibrated dropping funnel. The reaction mixture was stirred continuously for 2 hours and then the reaction was quenched with 20 mL of water. The reaction mixture was post-treated by drying the crude product to constant weight and subsequently analyzed by quantitative gas chromatography (GC).
