2,4,4-TRIMETHYL-2-PENTANETHIOL Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
2,4,4-Trimethyl-2-pentanethiol is a clear, colorless liquid.
Uses
tert-Octyl Mercaptan is used as a surfactant in the activity of carbon-supported platinum nanoparticles toward methanol oxidation reaction.
Safety Profile
Poison by ingestion. Irritating to eyes. A flammable liquid when exposed to heat, flame, or oxidizers. To fight fire, use foam, alcohol foam. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of SOx.
Potential Exposure
A mercaptan, sulfhydral, thioalcohol, and organic sulfide. Used as a lubricant additive and in polymer modification.
Shipping
UN3023 2-Methyl-2-heptanethiol, Hazard Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poison Inhalation Hazard; 3-Flammable liquid; Inhalation Hazard Zone B
Incompatibilities
Highly flammable; easily ignited by heat, sparks, or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixture with air. Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, and epoxides. Attacks many metals and rubber.
Waste Disposal
Use a licensed professional waste disposal service to dispose of this material. Dissolve or mix the material with a combustible solvent and burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber. All federal, state, and local environmental regulations must be observed.
