Manganese fluoride Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
Rose-colored, square prisms. Solubility in water 1.06g./100ml. Soluble in dilute hydrofluoric acid, readily soluble in concentrated hydrochloric and nitric acids.
Uses
Manganese(II) fluoride is used in the manufacture of special kinds of?glass?and?lasers.
Preparation
Manganese carbonate is added to an excess of 40% hydrofluoric acid solution contained in a platinum or lead dish. The pale-red solution of manganese fluoride is then decanted and dried at 110°C.
Safety Profile
Poison by subcutaneous route. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of F-. See also MANGANESE COMPOUNDS and FLUORIDES.
