Ruthenium(III) chloride trihydrate (cas# 13815-94-6) is a commonly used catalyst for oxidation reactions.

Synthesis

N,N-dimethyl-formamide and acetone were mixed in a dry reaction flask, bipyridine and ruthenium chloride trihydrate were added to the above reaction system (molar ratio 2:1), and the resulting reaction mixture was heated to reflux and kept at reflux with stirring for about 1.5 h. After completion of the reaction, it was cooled down (ice bath) and the insoluble precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with water. The insoluble precipitate in the system was collected by filtration and washed with water, and the target metal ruthenium complex was purified by recrystallization.
