Application

Hexafluoroisopropyl methacrylate (HFA) is a transparent, colorless liquid. It is primarily used in the synthesis of resins and coatings to improve their weather resistance, water resistance, and stain resistance; it is also used as a sheathing material for plastic optical fibers, as well as in contact lenses and computer toners. Furthermore, it can be used as an intermediate in pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Synthesis

To a 1L four-necked flask equipped with mechanical stirring, condenser tube (water-cooled), and thermometer was added 1.5 g of p-methoxyphenol, 30% fuming sulfuric acid 60 g, stirring, and then add dropwise at room temperature a mixture of methacrylic acid and hexafluoroisopropanol, to which methacrylic acid 103 g (1.5 g) was added. acid 103 g (1.2 mol), hexafluoroisopropanol 168 g (1 mol); the reaction was exothermic, and the titration time was about 20 min; at the end of the titration, the After the end of the reaction, the reaction was warmed up to 94??C for about 3 h. After the end of the reaction, hexafluoroisopropyl methacrylate 217 g was obtained by simple distillation at atmospheric pressure, the yield was about 92%, no need to further refinement. The content of hexafluoroisopropyl methacrylate reached 99.2% without further purification.
