GENERAL METHODS: A mixture of 9-anthracenecarboxaldehyde (10.0 mmol), malononitrile (11.0 mmol) and pyridine (10.0 mmol) was stirred for 6 hours at 95 °C. The reaction process was monitored by thin layer chromatography (TLC). After completion of the reaction, water (10 mL) was added to the reaction mixture and extracted with dichloromethane (3 x 10 mL). The organic layers were combined and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, followed by evaporation of the solvent under vacuum. The crude product was purified by column chromatography using hexane as eluent, resulting in (9-anthracenemethylene)malononitrile (1a-m), which was structurally characterized.
